Building a multi-player game, hardware badge, and React-based operating system for Twilio’s user conference

Multi-player Pong built with React.js and Twilio Sync, and the Hackpack in action. BLE presence detection let attendees join automatically as they approached the installation. The attendee’s avatar, created once and used throughout the conference, appeared on screen as their player. The Hackpack, a hackable hardware conference badge, served as a game controller over WiFi and communicated with the game board through Twilio Sync. Each active player’s Hackpack illuminated to the color of their gameboard paddle. Up to 6 attendees could play simultaneously in a 3v3 match. Gameplay ran continuously, with a computer player holding the board when there were 1 or 0 players. Attendees could redeem points earned through Pong at the swag store.
